NANOPARTICLES for medical devices

Nanoparticulate coatings for medical devices

Nanoparticles are increasingly used in medical devices to enhance their functionality and effectiveness, offering advantages in areas like drug delivery, imaging, and infection control. A few of the more common uses are;

  • Drug delivery – nanoparticles can be used to target specific cells or tissues, enhancing efficacy.
  • Biocompatibility of implants – the coating of implants with nanoparticulate films is used for improved integration with surrounding tissue.
  • Infection control –  for the creation of antimicrobial coatings such as copper oxide, to reduce the risk of infection.
  • Imaging – nanoparticles can used to enhance the contrast in various imaging processes such as X-Ray and MRI.
  • AIMD – nanoparticulate coatings can be added to active implantable medical devices (such as stents) for enhanced drug release and date transmission.
